Projects
CHET offers graduate students, faculty
and policy makers an active, collaborative learning environment.
While the Centre offers no formal academic programs, it
has close ties to the Department of Educational Studies,
the other graduate departments of the Faculty of Education,
as well as other academic units at UBC concerned with policy
studies. CHET organizes internal seminars and provides opportunities
for faculty and graduate students to participate in ongoing
research projects.
The following lists CHET’s externally funded research
projects, principal investigators and collaborative researchers.

University Continuing Education in Canada - Graduate Demand, Experience and Outcomes
Hans G. Schuetze, Maria Adamuti-Trache
Continuing Education (CE) has become increasingly significant for economic development as well as for individuals. University Continuing Education (UCE) is an important part of CE as universities are accepting the challenge of Lifelong Learning and discovering that UCE can yield important sources of new funding for the universities.
Not much is known in Canada about the demand side of UCE. Since the last comprehensive study on UCE is more than ten years old, the current proposal provides not only an update but also new insights into students' aspirations and information about a number of labour market and other outcomes as seem by participants themselves. The data from both the Adult Education and Training Surveys (AETS) and National Graduates Surveys (NGS) also contain data about broader questions such as how universities respond to learners' needs, and what barriers are experienced by graduates.
The results of the project are also linked to an international comparative study in which five European countries (Austria, Finland, France, Germany and the United Kingdom) as well as the United States have participated.
The project is partially funded by a research grant by the Canadian Association for University Continuing Education (CAUCE).
